We have been helping personal trainers and fitness experts reach more people and make more money. Most of them have grown more in the past 6 months than in their entire history. There is plenty of people around who are willing to invest in their health and fitness with the right person.

A number of my clients are thriving even in these tough economic times. One of them, Amber Technology, a small maker of herbal supplements and treatments for pets, is growing in sales and profits because we are focusing them on massive actions — calling their 350 plus nationwide dealers on a monthly basis to push sales through that channel, and redoing their website and SEO /PPC programs to attract those pet owners who want safe, effective, inexpensive treatments for a wide variety of pet ailments including Parvo, Distemper, heartworm, and even the ill effects of old age. Amber Technology has grown from $270,000 in 2007, to $420,000 in 2008. We are targeting sales of over $600,000 in 2009. Profits are growing even faster.

My business, and industry, is not affected by the economy. I am on track to do significantly better than last year, and I am adding personnel. I am a public insurance adjuster (I help people recover money on property insurance claims by representing them on an expert level). Actually, people may be more likely to use me in this economy, as they need every penny they can get, and they are not as worried about filing an insurance claim as they have been in the past.

A great company which is booming in these times. The product, a nutraceutical supplement boosts the immune system. I am a biochemist and will not recommend anything that I have not tried. Many companies have solicited my endorsement and this is the first one I have endorsed. I ordered an 8 week supply, tested it for two weeks and all of the three neighbors I gave the samples to came back and ordered.

It is interesting. I do wonder what the impact would be if we did not have televisions or radio. I do not listen to it why because it affects my judgement, call it BAD SEED! We have remained positive and continued to carry out our work in real estate sales often looking for better ways to do business. We have improved our presentations, our statistics and areas that we believe customers need better service, guess what OUR SALES have gone up dramatically. Stay positive and be careful what you listen to if its BAD SEED do not take it in. Stay around positive people!

I have regular contact with roughly 50 businesses, as well as the ones I deal with as a client or customer and I haven’t found ONE that is struggling, let alone feeling a ‘recession’. Personally, I’m doing better than ever in my business and my wife’s business has increased turnover by almost 800% in the past year or so…….what recession indeed!

Here in the UK I am working within the Telecoms sector, great times as everyone is looking at how they can trim….to be fair, its more to do with habits than anything else. Majority of busniess owners we deal with have not been concerned with the little things that may make a big difference (I believe you saying Brad is “Isn’t that interesting” or sometimes even “Isn’t that dumb!!” Classic example, very large motor manufacturer with offices here in the UK have just invested a vast amount in replacing their IT and Communications infrastructure, when asked if now was a good time, the response back was - “this is the best time, we haven’t stopped for 2 years solid, now we have slowed a little we have realised how out of date and slow our systems are, we need to gear up for the next shift” There are always opportunities there, you just need to be interested in your customer, interested in their solution and interested in getting the right result for them.

      Hi Brad,
Well this has been the most intense 4 months of my life. Working from home in a new business, with my wife and a one year old is a challenge not too many would sign on for. The most amazing thing - we are no where near the same people as when we started this adventure - business forces us to confront ourselves faster and more intensely than ever would have happened in years of being an employee.

We are not seeing much recession - if anything people are looking for better and more efficient marketing - and it doesn’t get any better than using the web. We are loving bringing better online marketing, and integrative offline-online marketing to businesses - because those that are doing well in this recession are really cranking it up right now. Sometimes bushfires really help forests regenerate.

Thanks for all the help from our awesome coach Warrick Bidwell - he keeps us about 10km out of our comfort zone and makes sure we keep going from there.

      Keep on Truckin’!

Hi Brad, we are a printer and consumables distribution company in Aus, and have refused to participate in a recession from the beginning. Our business is growing at more than 2% a month by being consistent (thanks Action Coach, Stefan Kazakis, for the help there) in the marketing and followthrough of that marketing and creative contact. We have always had awesome admin processes.

Now, more than ever, our customers are thinking about their own bottom line, and that’s where we all win, I can delight someone by affecting their profit, and making them feel good.

It doesn’t matter what you sell, a product or service, delighting others is easy. Consistenly delighting others is a winning formula.

this is so true and why i dont watch the news or anything negative as all it does is give negative thoughts. therefore focusing on the positive gives you so much more such as happiness, abundance and someone others want to be around. as my company has an action coach we can not see this recession just a lot of opportunities.

see what you want not what others see!

You know I was out on Saturday night here in Las Vegas where I live and I’ve got to ask “WHAT RECESSION?”

The restaurant was full with people still waiting to get in, the wine guy couldn’t keep up as he had to keep climbing to the top to get the best bottles down. I saw more magnums going out than usual, and the club was overflowing all night with people who were spending big …

My team has just had another record month with two team members joining our prestigious Diamond Club for the first time …

And why you ask, because we are focused on finding opportunity in this so called crisis.

Those of us who keep our heads will make this the best business years we’ve ever seen. Those who panic, worry and watch the news all the time will just give up and go hide in a cave.

Make next month your best ever, focus on it (you will have to do extra work for it) and it can and will happen.

One really wonders how this whole recession has been blown out of proportion by the media – this focus on the negative aspects of the economy that has driven many companies out of business while leaving others in a sea of uncertainty and fear.

For growth minded companies, however, the recession just does not exist – and these companies manage to find opportunity even in this crisis. One such example is ActionCOACH – the world’s number one business and executive coaching firm – which showed 21% year over year franchise growth as a company.

More significantly, for the first time in the company’s history, three ActionCOACH Business Coaches have banked fee earnings in December last year that have placed them in the “Diamond Level” coaching bracket.

Of the three, two of the “Diamond Level” coaches are from Australia and one is from the United States.

This shows that it is not all doom and gloom and while such stories are attracting more media attention than the ones that are thriving – there is much opportunity in the middle of this crisis.

The sharp decline in the food and retail sectors has not seeped into some of the other industries, such as the business coaching industry, which is touted as the second fastest growing industry, next only to IT. Business coaching continues to show robust growth, a fact validated by continued its growth.

The positive outlook of ActionCOACH Business Coaches permeates into their clients’ mindsets – as they continue to show extraordinary results, despite the economic downturn. Small business needs a boost now more than ever – and a Business Coach can inject life into these struggling enterprises.

There are many other such businesses that are actually experiencing growth – their success is due to a positive mindset and the ability to see opportunity in the midst of the economic crisis.

The puzzle for me is: Last year, the recession hit me early, from June onwards. People were late paying. No new work. I spent all of last year improving networks and marketing.

Then, this year, from January, business went into a very different and busy mode. It continues. I don’t understand this but have some ideas:

      1. Perhaps I have now developed enough networking, reputation and marketing out there. Perhaps I didn’t know the value of it. Maybe it reached a critical mass. Websites, products, reputation.
      2. Maybe in times of sharp focus, businesses look for better value to survive.
      3. Perhaps there is always money to be spent by those who want value. It’s survival. I have always been at the value end of the market. I have also valued relationships myself. People remember that.
      4. If the above is true, then the following applies: When times get tough, we, as a society behave less like a herd, and more like a pack. We dwell less on low cost when we need something, and more on guaranteeing value and therefore survival, so we tend to retract into a tight group of providers and consumers who can trust each other to get through and reach the other side. I suspect that everything I did to grow reputation, credibility and trust while times were easy are suddenly paying off. Why? Because when it’s survival, you invest in the person riding shotgun and you have to know they are right there with you.

I hope this is true and I hope the message encourages others to stay professional and focussed, because this might just be the time when your value, your standards and your quality ethics pay you off big time.

See you on the other side!

I decided years ago that I would refuse to let the world (media) tell me how to think and feel. Although things might have turned a bit, that is what life is all about. We just need to see the good, learn from the bad and move on.

After being laid off from my job in Las Vegas 9 months ago, I was excited to go into business for myself. So I rented my home and moved to Boise, which I abosolutely love. I am a Virtual Administrator and with all the lay-offs it has turned out to be the best thing ever. People have had to let their administration go, but still have projects that need to be done. So I work on a contractual basis saving them money and time and enjoying every job I do. No day is the same and I get to work with lots of different people and businesses learning something new each and every day.

I am grateful for the changes that happen in the world. Instead of the media and others only looking at the bad… maybe they should start seeing all the opportunity that comes from it! I am proud of all of you and what you have accomplished. Lets all keep thinking positive and spreading the word.

Some great comments, and interesting how the media impacts in different parts of the globe. I spend a lot of time in China on business and what I see time and time again is people and organisations focused on making things better each day. One CEO I met explained what I was seeing on the ground really succintly ” Why would we not want to engage with others; we see that the west has a need to reduce costs and China has a need to internationalise by working together everyone survives and prospers”
A great case of circles of influence

    • Nathan 3:38 pm on May 14, 2009 Permalink

It is really funny with these words “What Recession”. 12 out of 12 clients have had record months this year from complete different industries. They are busier then when there was no such word as “Economic Crisis”. To top this off, went to a workshop last night with 20 odd business owners and a majority are so busy they are turning away work.

it is all in the Actions and those who are finding it tough are the ones who wait for the phone to ring. Take it to heart, MASSIVE ACTION = MASSIVE RESULTS.

There’s an old Jiffy Donuts slogan (does anyone remember that chain?) that went something like this: As you go through life, my friend,/ Whatever be your goal,/ Keep your eye upon the donut/ And not upon the hole.

I’ve just bought a few shares in one of the big four Australian banks at a 2003 price - what a ripper! And just think - even if unemployment rises to 8% next year, that means about 90% of the workforce still have jobs, and most of those jobs are fairly secure. For most people, the level of panic is simply not logical.

Same goes for the government. The cash handouts to all and sundry are ridiculous - very few jobs are being created out of it, and it’s putting the country in hock for many years to come for what seems largely a vote-buying exercise. (And no, I’m not going to send my cheque back - I’m going to spend some of it on postage stamps and advertising, and see what I can do to grow the little gift into something much more substantial.)

People still have to buy stuff, and businesses that can powerfully market and deliver high quality products and services in their customer’s eyes will win through.

    • Chris Simm 3:39 pm on May 14, 2009 Permalink

Forget the doom and gloom get out there and talk to your customers. There’s an opportunity to show real empathy at the moment. Everyone is talking about how the media is dragging them down and comparing notes on the service they’re getting from their banks and others…including you. Be supportive, be optimistic, be helpful and there will be many more reasons to be cheerful.

As the owner of a 10 person marketing agency in San Diego I have definately seen the impact on our business. What I have decided to do (instead of focus on the negative):

      1. Pray- God is amazing and his word says- that all things are possible Thru Christ Jesus our Lord
      2. Be Thankful- for what we do have. I found all our focus on chasing new business and almost neglecting the business we did have. I am now more thankful then ever for the business we do have. We make our clients a priority and look at ways to impact their business everyday.
      3. Ask for referrals- it’s amazing that by simply asking for referrals, how many referrals we recieved.
      4. Help Others- so many people during this tough time are focused only on themselves and/or thier business- guess what- you are not in this alone, so do all you can to help others- you will be amazed how a simple smile can bring joy to a person’s day. Give of your time, of your resources, of your knowledge. Together we can come out on the other side much stronger.
      5. Have fun- make sure to laugh, to enjoy the day. Remember that each day is a gift from God. We all have the same number of seconds, minutes, hours in the day- so, I challenge all of us to “stop and smell the roses” live each day to the fullest and have fun….

I love what I’m reading and it just confirms what we have been experiencing which is steady and continous growth. We have new business coaches coming on board and it shows no sign of backing down. I just returned from Greece and even with their economy in turmoil, people are working, crowds are visiting their historical sites (and it’s not even high tourist season), businesses are selling products. In fact, while on layover in Frankfurt, Germany, I was stunned at the number of building projects and cranes and people I saw just from my limited airport view. I’m stunned because all my life, I believed recession meant no new growth and no sales prospects. I don’t see this and will keep my focus on the positive and not the negative garbage that the naysayers, doomsayers and media are touting. Maybe the media needs to get it’s collective heads out of the sand and take a real look at how businesses are doing worldwide. Everytime my husband and I go out or want to purchase something, we are stunned at the lineups and the people purchasing goods. We recently wanted to purchase some home renovation intallations and numerous companies have told us that they are too busy to even send out a salesman to give us a quote. Wow, I wonder what it would be like for them if we were out of the recession.

    • Rachel 3:41 pm on May 14, 2009 Permalink

I am a big believer that you are in control of your life - whether that’s deciding to participate in the recession, staying fat, staying unhappy or whatever.

I choose not to participate in the recession. What would happen if we all turned off the TV, didn’t listen to the doom & gloom and we made up our own mind about things? hmmmm, stranger things have happened!!

So much for Australia’s property market following the US market as previously reported. Yesterday’s news was that we are now going to have a mini housing boom - go figure… No wonder people get confused.

Why don’t the media ask the real world what is going on instead of listening to the so called experts. Maybe then they wouldn’t get their stories so mixed up.

I say let’s all get educated and take control of our lives….

    • Antoine Dupont 3:42 pm on May 14, 2009 Permalink

The truth is in the numbers. We have just closed Q1 2009 with an 11% increase in sales compared to a year ago (same period). We have decreased our operating expenses resulting in a higher net profit. All of that after increasing our rates, following the advise of our coach. in order to have a gross profit margin that is consistent with our goals.

Once thing I know, is that not all companies or industries suffer in a tough economic climate, some actually thrive, those who are ready & prepared.

Here are a few things we did:
1-Attend ALL the Quarterly Planning days - it’s all in the planning.
2-Listen to my coach, even when she is calling me on my bs
3-Worked on a kick ass marketing campaign based on a couple of full days with my coach to get it right. We currently have 12 campaigns that we are tracking weekly.
4-Made the company SALES focused - it’s ALL about sales - yes even if your are the accountant or secretary. everybody has an incentive and they all know what the numbers are. We reward results.
5-Treat all existing clients like GOLD
      6-Treat every leads like GOLD
      7-Treat our staff like GOLD
8-Complete overall of our expenses - we know what we spend our money on, what doesn’t produce results is removed.
9-Read books my coach tells me to read, she knows better than me. I’m currently reading Financial Intelligence & Failing Forward.
10-In the process of implementing a client referral program

Go out there and kick butt!!

What I am finding is that client who focus their attention on what they can control win. Also those who commit to making positive changes in their business and to those who actually implement the changes week in week out.

Its so easy to jump on the bandwagon of negativity. As the saying goes - “misery loves company” and newspaper sales increase during these times.

My advice to people is to Make a plan to increase your profits Ask the question of yourself “how can I increase my profits” and “what exactly must I do NOW” and then implement this plan.

It may not be easy but it will be more beneficial than doing nothing at all.

Well this is almost the end of my first year in business so i may be a junior in this conversation but never the less enthusaistic and relentlessly Positive !
In my opinion (humble) i would suggest that diversity and a good point of difference is what keeps you fighting your competitors and keeps you looking fresh and active with your clients. My competitors who are drastically undercutting prices to fight for the work are welcome to it. I effectively now have two businesses - that makes two lots of opportunities with no extra overheads. So id say being Creative in how you can offer more for no extra cost instead of undercutting is a good way of fending off the ‘R’ word

Like in any business environment - act smart. Aviod activities that don’t make money, and gravitate to those things that work. It’s about testing everything you are doing and measureing the results. If it hurst “STOP IT”, if it’s working, do it more often. Success in many ways is simple and avoiding a recession is all about side stepping the junk the media tells you, and actually DO what it takes to continue to succeed.

It is interesting to observe all the doom and gloom talk that so many people are engaged in regarding the “global recession”. I have recently read several excellent books that addressed the need for peoples thinking to change….the people that will survive are the people that are willing to change the way they think and become innovative and creative in terms of their futures and stop holding onto the past way of earning their livings. I have personally observed this in my own business. Our sales are up approx. 60% over the same time period last year….at a time when everyone around us are complaining about the lack of jobs, or opportunity or money, etc., we have people prospering at a higher level than ever before. Ask any successful business person, this is a time where fortunes are being made by the people that embrace this time of change and take control of their own futures, and stop buying into the media and the mass panic. You can be part of the problem, or part of the solution! We welcome anyone that wants to be a part of the solution to contact us.

We decided not to participate in the hyper media negativity although we have experieced a down turn, but you know what - we got better at what we do, took more care of our customers, our staff went the extra mile too, we achieved a profit this year even though we planned just for survivial its tough but do-able and we’ll see you at the other end!

Our business is interior design and building. There has been a noticeable and significant drop in the general public spending money on their homes or building projects. Our industry had become out of control with people demanding higher pay, however not wanting to go the extra mile. Clients building or renovating were at the mercy of the trades & newly cashed up bogans. As an Interior Design company, we were working twice as hard to acheive budgets for clients, due to the above. A recorrection had to occur. And I believe that is what it is, a re correction, not a recession at all.

Up untill November ‘08, for 15 years, we never had a requirement for marketing. The phone always rang with new clients all via word of mouth. We had been incredibly busy, employing 5 staff, plus investing new computer & office equipment. Due to the fast rate of growth we had experienced, as the leader & principal designer, I was flat out. Although we had systems in place and regular staff meetings, as the leader and owner, I was not trained in how to test and measure, or how manage to the best of my ability. I trusted staff whom were suppossedly proffessionals in their industry and paid them well. I had also trusted consultants to install our $40,000 worth of new equipment so the office was problem free and state of the art. Another big mistake/lesson. I was not taking the time to learn and be responsible, as I was always too busy, too focused on what I did well.

The day I started as a client of ACTION Coach, a whole new world of understanding and meaning opened up to me. It was like someone gave me eye drops and I began to see clearly. In the last 7 months we have moved staff on who were not right for our company and scaled right back down to basics. Although we have 3 empty computer stations, I can visualise them being active again and everyone excited and loving their roles in our newly awakened comany. We are continuing to service our current clients plus acheiving great and stunning outcomes. Through this
re-correction I have been allowed the time to learn every role in my business inside out. So everyday I grow as a strong and successful leader. I am excited by what today is showing us and tommorrow holds.

ACTION Coaching and the slowing of the economy hit our cashflow hard, however, I choose to see it as a positive impact and a re-correction of peoles values on what is really important in life. I have learnt so much about marketing, setting up websties and communication. I have also been reconnecting with contacts and strengthening my awesome networks, which for the last 4 or so years had been neglected due to the fast and volumeous amount of jobs we were working on.

Whilst I have always put my clients and suppliers first in business, and always strived for a level of service and design that is “THE BEST”, not having systems made life very stressfull. We NOW can acheive amazing results, take on more jobs and have great fun plus continue growing as a company and individuals. It is a very exciting time & we must all stick togeather in the pursuit of love, life, acheivement and balance.

Love to hear from anyone with wisdom

Here’s the good news… no matter if there is a recession or not, there are always opportunities. You just have to be good at finding them — and determining which ones are worthy of your time, and which ones aren’t.

Personally, I’ve found my business growing both last year and this year. So just because the economy in general isn’t doing as well, doesn’t mean your business has to suffer.

Yout attitude determines your altitude! I heard this a LOOOONG time ago and believe, it works. Many times, when people ask me the question,” How are you doing?” I have a BUNCH of answers:
      1) “Fantastic BUT I WILL get better!”
      2) “If I got any better, I would have to be twins!”
      3) “I can’t complain because I have a philosophy! Fifty per cent of those who ask you, DON’T CARE and the other fifty per cent are HAPPY that YOU have a problem! So why give either half any satisfaction!

Seven years ago, I sold two of the three businesses that I owned. A financial planning company and a tax prepartion firm. BUT with the CPA firm that bought my tax practice, I stipulated a provision, that I could continue to do my current clients and any NEW ones that I acquired, for as long as I was capable and STILL WANTED TO! At the time, I weighed OVER 400#, I was tired, run down and just plain didn’t care! BUT on October 19, 2004, I had surgery and lost 186# by May of 2006! (In fact, I weighed eight pounds less than when I got out of the Marines nearly 46 years ago!) I not only look more healthy, I have more energy than I have had in 30+ years. I even started a NEW business as an Independent Distributor for Send Out Cards. My only wish was that I had access to a company like Send Out Cards when I started in business 40 years ago! I honestly feel I would have doubled or EVEN TRIPLED my income in the intervening years.
